Michigan State University with the assistance of local blueberry farmers developed 3 new strains of blueberries. Rights were given to Michigan Blueberry growers to sell the plants east of the Mississippi, but granted licensing rights of the plants to the west of the Mississippi to the highest bidder, which happened to be an Oregon company. Fruit Companies get a tart letter from the FDA
29 US Fruit companies have received warnings from the FDA concerning their claims that their fruit products contain ingrediants that prevent cancer and heart disease among other things. The FDA states that the companies claims have classified their products as drugs and as such need FDA approval, which they do not have. They have been given 15 days to respond.
